The "180 steps per minute" cadence target has become running-culture gospel, repeated in coaching articles and baked into GPS watch alerts, usually traced back to informal observations of elite runners at the 1984 Olympics. The number gets treated as a universal prescription. It isn't one.
What cadence actually controls
At a fixed pace, cadence and stride length are inversely related — take more steps per minute and each step gets shorter; take fewer and each step gets longer, for the same speed. Higher cadence at a given pace generally means less time spent airborne per stride and lower impact forces per landing, which is the injury-prevention argument behind pushing cadence up for runners who overstride badly. But cadence also scales naturally with pace and with height — a 5'2" runner and a 6'4" runner running the same pace will not, and should not, have the same natural cadence, and elite runners across a range of heights don't all land on 180.

Worked example: Running 9:00/mile at 160 steps per minute implies a stride length of roughly 4.4 feet per step. Nudging cadence up to 175 at the same 9:00 pace shortens stride to around 4.0 feet — a meaningful mechanical change from a modest cadence adjustment, achieved without running any faster.
Whether to change yours
Cadence is worth adjusting deliberately if you're a known overstrider — landing with your foot well ahead of your center of mass, which shows up as a harsh heel strike and is associated with higher impact loading. For runners without that specific pattern, chasing a fixed number like 180 for its own sake has weak evidence behind it and can create new problems (choppy stride, higher metabolic cost) without fixing anything. If you're going to change cadence, do it gradually — 5-10% shifts over several weeks, not an overnight switch — and let a coach or gait analysis, not a target number alone, tell you whether you actually need to.
