Watch the splits from any world-record marathon and you'll see the same pattern: the second half is faster than the first, often by a minute or more. Eliud Kipchoge's 2018 Berlin world record went out in 1:01:06 for the first half and came home in 1:00:15 — a negative split at the highest level of the sport, executed on purpose.
Most recreational runners do the opposite. They go out too fast on race adrenaline, hold on through halfway, and lose 30 seconds to a minute per mile in the final 10K. It's the single most common pacing mistake in distance racing.
Why the math favors going out conservative
Running even slightly too fast early forces your body into a higher reliance on glycogen and anaerobic metabolism than a controlled effort would. That deficit compounds — you don't just lose the time you gained early, you lose more than that later as your legs and fuel stores run short. A negative split, by contrast, banks nothing early but protects your ability to hold pace — or accelerate — when it matters most, in the final miles when the field is thinning out around you.
Building a negative split plan

Worked example: Marathon goal of 3:30:00 with a 2% negative split. First half comes in around 1:46:15, second half around 1:43:45 — roughly 8 seconds per mile faster over the back 13.1 miles. That's a small, controllable adjustment, not a dramatic surge, which is exactly the point: negative splitting isn't about a heroic final 10K, it's about not giving away time in the first one.
A realistic starting point
If you've never run a deliberate negative split before, start conservative — a 1-2% split is enough to correct the far more common problem of going out too hot, without requiring you to hold back so much early that you're leaving fitness on the table. Save the more aggressive 3-5% splits for once you've got a race or two of practice reading your own effort accurately in the first few miles, when adrenaline makes "easy" feel a lot harder to judge than it is.
