Pace vs. Speed: What Runners Actually Need to Know

Two ways of describing the same run — and why one of them owns the sport.

Cyclists talk in miles per hour. Swimmers talk in time per 100. Runners talk in pace — minutes per mile or minutes per kilometer — and once you understand why, a lot of race-day math gets easier.

They're the same thing, inverted

Speed asks: how much distance per unit of time? Pace asks: how much time per unit of distance? They are reciprocals of each other. A runner moving at 6.0 mph is running 10:00 per mile, because 60 minutes divided by 6 miles is 10 minutes per mile. Double the speed to 12 mph and pace halves to 5:00 per mile.

speed (mph) = 60 ÷ pace (min/mi)

The inversion is why pace feels strange at first: a bigger pace number means a slower runner. Nobody brags about a high pace.

Why runners chose pace

Pace won because racing is organized around distance markers, not clock intervals. Courses have mile and kilometer marks; they do not have signs telling you how long you've been running. When you pass mile 8 of a half marathon, the useful question is "what did that mile cost me?" — and pace answers it directly. Split at 8:30, goal at 8:15, you're 15 seconds down. No division required at 160 beats per minute.

Treadmills are the great exception. They report belt speed in mph or km/h, which is why runners perpetually stand on the belt doing arithmetic. (The conversion is one input away on this site, incline adjustment included.)

The mental math worth memorizing

  • 10:00/mi = 6.0 mph. The cleanest anchor point in running. From there: 8:34/mi = 7.0 mph, 7:30/mi = 8.0 mph, 6:00/mi = 10.0 mph.
  • Mile-to-kilometer pace: subtract about 38%. More practically: an 8:00/mi runner is a 4:58/km runner. Your per-kilometer pace is your per-mile pace divided by 1.609.
  • Seconds add up predictably. Ten seconds per mile over a marathon is about 4 minutes and 22 seconds of finish time. This is why coaches obsess over tiny pace discipline errors in the first 10K.

Even pacing wins races

The most useful thing about thinking in pace is what it does to race strategy. Nearly every distance world record of the modern era was run with remarkably even — or slightly negative — splits. Banking time early feels productive and costs you double later: the physiological price of running 15 seconds too fast in mile 3 is paid back with interest in mile 23. A pace target per mile, checked at every marker, is the cheapest insurance in the sport.
