Why lap splits beat pace-per-mile on a track

A standard outdoor track is 400 meters — roughly a quarter mile, but not exactly, and that small gap compounds into real pacing error over a workout of 8-12 reps if you're mentally converting mile pace to lap time on the fly. Working in 400m, 200m, and 100m splits directly, rather than approximating from a mile pace, removes that conversion error and gives you a number to hit on every single lap marker, not just at the end of a rep.

Using splits in a real workout

Write the splits down before you get to the track — 200m checkpoints for anything 800m and under, 400m checkpoints for longer reps — and check them against your watch or the clock at each marker, not just at the finish of each interval.
